Ret. Capt. John Poindexter, center, applauds as President Barack Obama shakes hands with members of the Alpha Troop 11th Armored Cavalry regiment, who were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their heroic actions in Vietnam nearly 40 years ago. Poindexter, who led the troops into battle, also wrote a book called “The Anonymous Battle,” which detailed the events and called for his men to be recognized with the award.

A rare shot where the president has his eyes open. I'd also like to add that the East Room of the White House is very difficult to shoot in, because they have you shooting into a yellow, shiny background. Awful.

Another chance to photograph the president. In some ways, the rain was awful because it soaked me (and my camera gear), but the umbrellas also made for colorful, interesting shots.

I liked this shot a lot too, the lone family member amongst the benches.

Knowing it was supposed to rain the next day, I went to the memorial the night before to get some shots. The coming storm made for a colorful sunset as the clouds swept over the Pentagon.

Rachel Huddleston, a South Dakota native who now lives in Washington, D.C., thanks Wayne Johnsen for his service in the Navy during World War II. Johnsen was one of 113 South Dakota veterans that visited the memorials this weekend through the Honor Flight Network. (Click on image to see gallery.)
